IEW U.S. History - Week Eight

IEW – Week 8

Give vocabulary quiz. Grade the quiz.

How did everyone do on your reports? They were a little longer this time. Did that make it too hard?

So, we each have written either two or three paragraphs, and each paragraph is about a different topic. We’re going to put our paragraphs together into one report now. But, we don’t want it to sound like two or three different reports jammed together. This is how we’re going to fix this:

We will be adding an introductory sentence at the beginning of the report that will introduce the subject of the report.

If we don’t do this, the reader may be confused. They will begin reading your report and assume that it is about medicine in colonial times. When they get to the paragraph about superstitions or doctors, they will be confused. This is why we need to let the reader know – at the beginning of the report – that the subject of the entire report is care of the sick.

Let’s look at a sample of someone’s report on page A-9.

Then, we’ll finish the report with a final clincher, which will restate the introductory sentence.

As my dad says about preaching: we’ll tell them what we’re going to tell them, then tell them, then tell them what we told them.

(Look at sample)

So, your writing assignment for this week is to add an introductory sentence and a final clincher to your report. Now, the introductory sentence cannot say something like: “My report is about…” or “In this report”. Instead you need to make a general statement about the Care of the sick in colonial times. (read example again on page A-9.)

Write or type it neatly and make sure to mark all of your elements of style. Also, make sure that you include the checklist. I can’t assign any points if you don’t include that page.

(If there is time, go over pages 69 and 70.)
